A Necessary Evil?

Obamacare. Does that sound familiar to you? There are several phrases or words that describe health insurance in our country these days and I’m sure each of you has your own opinion on it. Unfortunately, CEO’s and business owners are being challenged with decisions around health insurance and what it means to their organizations on a daily basis. I’m guessing the phrases or words running through their heads range from ‘health insurance is a major part of our benefits package’ to ‘health insurance is a necessary evil’. Regardless, the decision they make with regards to this will have a major impact on their company, their employees and their bottom line.
More times than not, the number one focus is how health insurance impacts the bottom line. Let’s face it, employer sponsored health insurance is probably one of the top 3 budget items for an organization…on paper, at least. But so much gets lost when it’s looked at as simply a necessary evil. Have you ever taken a step back and looked at how you can use health insurance as a benefit that’s considered more than just ‘insurance’?
For comparison purposes, let’s think of the car you drive. What happens if you have multiple accidents or don’t keep up on the proper maintenance schedule? You’ll probably be heading to the local dealership for a new car. Unfortunately, we don’t have the luxury of turning ourselves in for the new, luxury model.
It’s time for a mind shift in how we think about health insurance. Health care, shouldn’t be defined as treating sickness, but should be viewed as the mechanism for preventing sickness.
As a CEO or business owner, think of the impact you could have on your organization, your employees and your bottom line if this was how you viewed health insurance? Think of the transformation that could happen if you encouraged your employees to “know their numbers” (BMI, blood pressure, cholesterol, etc.), obtain preventative services, stay compliant with their medications, and make better overall health care choices?
Continuing to view health insurance as a necessary evil is the same as using health insurance for treating sickness; it’s too late to have an impact. However, choosing to use health insurance as a mechanism for preventing sickness is creating awareness around something that can positively impact your organization, your employees, and your bottom line.
