A Once in a Lifetime Goal

The biggest play on words ever is staring us right in the face and business leaders must act now to take advantage of it. Never again will we be able to create a 2020 goal. 2020 is the perfect year to create a goal because you can relate it to 20/20 vision. Can you clearly see where you’re going to be in 2020? Do you have 20/20 vision for the year 2020? What a great opportunity for inspiration!
My company has done this. We’re going to end the year 2014 at approximately $75 million in annualized revenue. Part of our 2020 Vision states that we’ll have $150 million in annualized revenue. We want to double in size by the end of the year 2020. This is what our 20/20 vision has us striving for. For us to hit this amount requires we keep the consistent growth rate we’ve had for the past three years. Certainly a task that becomes a bit more difficult as you get larger, but not out of the realm of possibility. As the CEO, it’s my job to inspire everyone to believe we can hit our goal – albeit I don’t expect it to be easy.
The greatest thing about creating a 2020 Vision is you’ve put a clear stake in the ground. As you work with your leaders, this stake should drive the conversation. Once we decided to double the size of our company by 2020, it required my leaders to begin thinking about the business in the longer run – they needed to be farsighted. Some of the questions we’re grappling with:
- Do we have the right procedures in place to hire 300 new employees by 2020?
- Do we have processes to train and develop all of these new people?
- What operational areas do we need to improve if we plan to double our size?
- Do we have the proper amount of sales people and a solid marketing plan?
- Can we double our size in our current geographic area or do we need to expand?
These questions have inspired everyone. Each of our leaders has been forced to think strategically because of our 2020 Vision. We’re asking these questions so we can see more clearly.
However, my team also needs to be nearsighted. We have to focus on the year ahead. When we have our annual management retreat, although we discuss many items, the main question we’re trying to answer is – “What are the 3–7 strategic projects we need to accomplish in the next year to bring us closer to our 2020 Vision.” This strategy brings clarity to our meetings.
I hope all of you consider creating, promoting and inspiring your company to a 2020 Vision. This opportunity will only happen once in our lifetime.
