I recently stumbled across a blog piece on Forbes about effective communication and speakers. There was a sentence within that said, “How can you galvanize, inspire or guide others if you don’t communicate in a clear, credible and authentic way?” I’d never actually thought about authenticity being a defining factor of what makes a communicator great. But in actuality, I think it’s the differentiator that I’ve always struggled to verbalize.
To be authentic by definition means to be true to one’s own personality, spirt or character. It’s no surprise that a message delivered by someone who believes in what they’re saying is highly effective. Think there’s no place for it in corporate America? Think Steve Jobs. You could day he was sort of successful at communicating.
Here are four tips to be more authentic in the way you communicate:
- Actions Speak Louder than Words
Behavior is single-handedly your greatest mode of communication and it must coincide with what you say. If your actions do not align with your words, all trust will go out the window. It’s absolutely better to say nothing at all, if your actions will contradict your ultimate messaging.
- Say What You Mean
Simplicity is powerful in communication. Creating simple, memorable snippets of information will help you create messaging that is heard. If you struggle simplifying your message, it could be that you’re unclear in what you want to say.
- Showcase Who You Are
When speaking, we often tend to corporatize our thoughts, which can lead to a feeling of insincerity. Use language that screams you. Concentrate on being real. People want and respect real.
- Be Seen
Face-to-face or voice-to-voice communication is more effective. Period. While there’s a time and a place for email, it’s easily forgettable.
Creating a connection with whomever you’re speaking to is the key. And being real is the way to do it. Try it and see for yourself?
