Baby Boomers are Booming, How to Echo Their CCRC Needs

Today, an estimated 10,000 baby boomers will turn 65. Pretty big number, don’t you think? Well, an average of 10,000 baby boomers will turn 65… every day… for the next 15 years. You read that right. The boomers are booming, and they’re booming into continuing care retirement communities, or CCRCs.
We’ve already seen the boomers place very different demands on their CCRCs. The preceding generation is known as the “greatest generation,” but they’re also known as the “silent generation.” They don’t demand much and CCRCs catered to that. By contrast, the boomers continue to boom and their echoes are being heard by CCRCs. The boomers are looking for, no, demanding not only more amenities, but more opportunities. Some amenities and opportunities that weren’t important in the past are viewed as necessities now. Think a fully loaded gym with machines and exercise classes. Think Wi-Fi and business centers with teleconferencing capabilities.
Boomers want to continue their unique lifestyles into their retirement and twilight years. In order for them to pursue their happiness, they want to continue to work, volunteer and pass on their knowledge and wisdom. Why not provide them with actual jobs and volunteer opportunities to keep them feeling good and contributing to their immediate community and society as a whole? These jobs and responsibilities may include receptionists, drivers, companions to other residents, mentors, teachers and the list goes on. There is a rare opportunity for CCRCs to achieve a win-win-win. The CCRC could offer more programs (win), created and managed by residents (win) and attended by residents (win).
The call to action for CCRCs is loud and clear. The boomers will continue to make their voices heard. Let’s continue to learn from this big, unique, diverse pool of knowledge and skills.
