Preventive care is all the buzz right now - or at least it should be. In case you’re not sure what I mean by preventive care, I’m referring to your annual physical. This visit isn’t treating anything specific, but rather helping you keep your finger on the pulse of your health. It’s a way to potentially catch something early before it turns into something major. As an employer, this means keeping your employees healthy longer. It can also mean lower healthcare costs if something is caught and treated early. Healthy employees are happy employees, after all!
What’s even better is that with most health plans, this is a no cost benefit for all enrolled members when provided by an in-network physician. Yep, you heard me right, it’s FREE. Employees can visit the United States Department of Health and Human Services’ site, to see a full list of covered adult, woman and child services.
Here are some tips to share with employees to encourage them to maximize this awesome benefit:
- Appointment time. When calling your primary care physician’s office, it’s important to let them know when making the appointment that it’s for your annual physical. This will trigger specific coding in their system. It’s all in the coding, so this step is crucial.
- Coverage. You can expect things like blood pressure screenings, standard blood panels, age specific tests (e.g. colonoscopy, mammogram, etc.), immunizations and much more to be covered at no cost. Certain age specific tests like colonoscopies and mammograms are typically done by another doctor or at another facility. As long as your primary doctor codes your procedure as preventive, it’ll cost you nothing too.
- Diarrhea of the mouth. Your annual physical isn’t the time to ask your primary care physician questions about other ailments that might be plaguing you. It’s truly a time to get a whole bunch of tests to make sure you’re well overall. If you ask your doctor to treat you for something specific during this annual physical, they may charge you for an actual doctor’s visit.
- What if. If your blood panel comes back showing you have high cholesterol, or more tests need to be ordered as a result of certain procedures, now you’re being treated for something specific. The initial annual physical would still be covered in full, but the subsequent visits to treat the symptoms will be either a copay or deductible/coinsurance expense.
- Importance. The importance of making sure you do this annually is that catching something early can save your life.
