How Weight Loss Interventions Reduce Workers' Comp Claims

How much of an impact can your healthcare employees’ weight play into your Workers’ Compensation claims? Be prepared to be surprised.
Based on “Indemnity Benefit Duration and Obesity,” a report published in June 2012 by the National Council on Compensation Insurance Inc., obesity significantly contributes to length of time during which claimants receive indemnity benefits through Workers’ Compensation.
Individuals who have a body mass of 40 or higher are considered morbidly obese. The study found that for employees who meet that credential, medical costs are 6.8 times the costs for employees that’re of a healthy weight. Additionally, an employee that’s considered morbidly obese is twice as likely to make a claim, along with almost 13 times more lost workdays.
If employees have BMIs between 35 and 40, medical costs will be 3.1 times higher. If BMIs are between 30 and 35, expect medical costs associated with Workers’ Compensation claims to be 2.6 times that of employees of healthy weight.
