Insurance Brokers are Sexy (Part 2)

If you read my last blog post, you know I’m convinced that insurance brokers have a serious identity problem. Far too many people couldn’t distinguish a brokerage from a carrier or agent, let alone if work for a wholesaler. But I strongly believe the public is missing the boat on the importance of insurance brokers and our impact on the world.
People understand accounting firms. People understand law firms. People even understand investment brokerages. People don’t have a clue about insurance brokerages. And I’m willing to argue the work we do is more exciting and more far-reaching in its impact than any of those other businesses I mentioned. Here’s what people should understand:
Insurance brokers are crazy sexy cool because we make people safer, healthier and happier, all while helping businesses grow the economy. How many jobs get to do that?
You probably haven't thought much about how your insurance broker can make the world a better place, but we have. A lot. I realize every brokerage does this in their own way. At Assurance, it’s all about “Minimizing risk. Maximizing health.” We strongly believe the scope and breadth or our services have very real-world consequences.
These are just a few of the opportunities we have every day to make a difference:
- Help workers avoid injury, even save lives
- Provide families access to needed medical care
- Improve the quality and longevity of people's lives by promoting a healthy lifestyle
- Make a secure and comfortable retirement possible for millions
- Increase happiness in the workplace and see happiness translated to the home
- Help businesses improve profitability so they can grow our economy and add jobs
I know, sexy is a strong word. (I’d offer lots of examples of sexy, but my family reads this blog.) But I do believe the words “insurance brokerage” should provoke a reaction of excitement and admiration; of envy even. Everyone should be so lucky in their career to be in a position to make the kind of impact on the world that brokerages do.
I’ll admit I take this personally. I wish more people understood this. And not just because I’m tired of explaining it. And not just because it would be easier to attract the best talent to our industry. And not just because I think it enables our clients to value our work even more. No, I wish this understanding was just a universally accepted fact because it absolutely would’ve helped me when I was single and dating. “Insurance. I work for an insurance brokerage,” wasn’t exactly a check in the plus column when I was trying to pick up a girl up in a bar.
Therefore, let’s all agree to start thinking about insurance brokers as the sexy and cool and super important people they are. For the youngsters out there. Dating’s hard enough.
