Mean People Suck

You can’t make people nice. But you can identify people who are – and hire them. We’ve identified 11 “Best and Brightest” traits we use to recruit and select when hiring at Assurance, regardless of position. Three of these traits connect together very specifically to define what we mean by nice:
- Caring - displays kindness and concern for others; treats others with courtesy
- Positive - possesses an optimistic point of view; sees challenges as opportunities
- Understanding - listens with ears, eyes and heart before speaking; clarifies to avoid confusion
Are we then a company made up of a bunch of pushovers? Hardly! We balance these out with traits such as proactive, accountable and ambitious. Maybe it would be simpler to subscribe to the “no assholes” philosophy that’s a cool statement for some companies. But, we found that interview questions such as “Are you a jerk? Do you exhibit mean qualities? Are you generally unhelpful?” are too easy to answer incorrectly.
So, we define nice, we hire nice people and those nice people create unparalleled organic growth for our company and results for our clients. And it all works because we help each other out.
Instilled in the culture of nice, is the concept of showing appreciation for each other. In our world, you can hit an electronic High Five button on our intranet and tell a coworker exactly why you appreciate them or recognize them for a job well done – a pretty nice thing to do.
In the first seven business days of August alone, our employees electronically High Fived each other 202 times. Of these appreciative gestures, more than half – a full 107 – included the word “help” or “assist.” And that’s where nice creates results that count. People helping each other learn new jobs more quickly, accelerating personal development, backing them up when they’re out, helping them when they’re busy and making sure no balls are dropped.
That sure is nice.
