The Frosting or The Cake?

Metaphors aside, talking just real, actual cake, I’m all about the frosting. I love cake, and I love cake more with lots of frosting. If I take the cake metaphor to workplace culture, though, it’s cake first all the time. Left to my own devices, I’d probably forget to frost it.
At Assurance, we’re fortunate to be a company well recognized for our workplace culture. I’m proud of that accomplishment – not for the recognition and press that comes with it, but for the underlying foundation it represents. To achieve these awards, it means our employees are expressing the positives of our culture and the impact it has on their daily work life.
Knowing that more than 400 people go to work each day feeling valued, appreciated and engaged in creating great results that impact others’ lives is a special thing. People often ask me what it is about our culture that our employees value. My response is always that we hold fun, celebratory events, we promote active participation, we foster personal relationships and we create inviting physical workspaces. But first and foremost, our foundation is strong – our company is secure, our work is important and our approach to getting it done is thoughtful.
There is a secret ingredient in our batter that produces a firm foundation with just the right texture. And we’re hard on ourselves, always looking to improve. But without that dependable cake, no amount of frosting in the world could sweeten it up.
