An Institution of Higher Education must be committed to the restoration of critical operations in an emergency. The COOP will enable the campus to maintain the infrastructure of essential functions at an institution. It also allows the institution to sustain the safety and welfare of employees, students, and visitors, deliver academic programs to students and maintain critical businesses, finances and infrastructure operations.
COOP Planning Process
- Establish operational groups such as the following:
- Administration (Payroll, HR Finance, Food Services, etc.)
- Student Affairs/Residence Life
- Academic Affairs (Deans Office, Academics, Library, Shops, etc.)
- Information Technology
- Make sure senior leadership is involved and has their own responsibilities from the beginning. These responsibilities include:
- Allocating sufficient resources and knowledgeable personnel to develop the COOP
- Developing a continuity and succession of leadership section
- Setting a policy by determining how the institution will manage and control identified risk
- Approving the COOP annually
- Establish orders of succession at the institution level and the department level.
With a proper plan in place and the right preparation measures the amount of disruption to your institution will be minimized and your students, employees and staff will all feel supported and able to maintain a normal lifestyle.
