Well, we’re almost there – January 1, 2015. It’s the 4th quarter (and frankly, in the benefits world, that actually starts in, like, August or something, I can’t remember anymore!) and for many of you, it means a whole lot more than it ever has in the past. After all the buildup, all the talk, all the planning, after everything that’s happened since the ACA was signed into law back in March 2010, it’s finally time for it all to come together. The employer mandate, in all its glory, is finally here.
Are you ready? Do you even know what to do at this point? Even after all the work that’s already been done, that’s a legitimate question. There’s been a major push over the last few years towards finding the right “solution” – the focus has been has been on learning about the ACA, and determining what benefits best meet the employer mandate’s requirements (oh, and dealing with all the changes that have cropped up with new rules coming from the regulators). But now the time has come to shift gears from learning what to do towards actually doing it, and that’s no small task. The fine details of the mandate – the things that may have gotten lost in the shuffle while the attention was on the “big picture” have to be attended to, and time is running short.
Lately, I’ve had virtually identical conversations with many of my clients. It usually starts like this: “Where should I be at right now?” What follows is a top-down discussion of the steps employers need to be making – right now – to be prepared for January 1. There are a lot of details to be discussed, and of course every employer has unique circumstances that need to be addressed, but the sequence of steps to be taken are basically the same.
To that end, we’ve taken that conversation and put it into written form! Our new ACA Final Preparations White Papers encapsulate the common items and steps that employers subject to the mandate need to be taking as we transition into 2015. Even if the mandate doesn’t apply to you in 2015, the reporting requirements will, and many of these steps will need to be followed in order to get that part right. We’ve even created industry specific versions of this white paper to speak directly to the needs of certain niches, including staffing, construction, manufacturing, healthcare and more.
