A sigh of relief is felt amongst many organizations – open enrollment is FINALLY over. Or is it? After weeks of hearing and reading about the importance of using benefit plans efficiently and effectively, participating in wellness programs to maintain better health and creating a more consumer-minded approach to healthcare, the communication ceases as open enrollment has officially ended for the year. All too often, employers go from over-communicating during this time to radio silence shortly after it ends.
Talk about a momentum killer! It’s time to take control and capitalize on all the awesome headway you made during open enrollment with employees. Here are three essential reasons why communicating throughout the year, and not just at open enrollment time, is worthwhile:
Repetition is key. Programs and plans are still new to employees. Open enrollment did just happen, right? They need to hear again, and maybe again, what it is they purchased at open enrollment time and what the benefits are of each. Did you just launch a consumer-driven health plan for the first time? How about educate employees on their health savings account and the benefits of it? Or maybe it was the launch of that brand new wellness initiative the company is so proud of? Regardless of what it was, your employees need refreshers. They need to know more about the new programs or benefit plans offered so that they can maximize each.
Bite-sized info please. Employees need small bits of information that are actionable and easily digestible. Sending out communications once or twice a year with TONS of pertinent information just breeds information overload. Brain shutdown is probable. Sending smaller tidbits of info on a more regular basis will be much more effective. Keeping communications to reminders, tips, tricks, updates, action items, etc. and sending them regularly throughout the year will make the info stick. That is after all what you’re after.
Engage year round. Communicating once or twice a year makes your topic(s) feel unimportant. Keep employees engaged year round by communicating as regularly as possible about benefit plan specifics, wellness initiative updates, company updates, etc. As your ongoing communication continues, employees will come to expect it and seek out guidance, tips and additional resources from you.
Don’t let all your hard work at open enrollment go to waste. Be heard year-round and reap the benefits of a more educated and engaged employee population.
