Schaumburg, IL (August 3, 2012) - On July 24, 2012, employees from Assurance volunteered their time at the Northern Illinois Food Bank (NIFB) in Geneva, IL in an effort to help the 61,600 people needing meal assistance each week in Northern Illinois. The NIFB acquires, handles and distributes food to pantries, soup kitchens, shelters and other 501(c)(3) hunger reduction sites, as well as offers agencies educational opportunities to become more effective at fighting hunger in their communities.
With hunger on the rise, the NIFB has been incurring between a 35% and 50% surge throughout the thirteen counties it serves. As a result, volunteers have played an integral role in supplying this ever-increasing demand. Assurance lent a hand to the organization by checking expiration dates, and sorting and packing meat for distribution. Overall, 7,965 pounds of meat were sorted and packed by Assurance employees in one day's work.
Assurance Senior Vice President Troy Stanton said, "It's great to see what an immediate impact we can have on the families and children in the many communities that surround Assurance.” Human Resources Coordinator Sarah Wirth added, "Packing and sorting meat is tiring work, but well worth it for such an important cause."
NIFB and Assurance have partnered together since 2005 through the employee-run Assurance Caring Together (ACT) committee. Under the motto "We Can Be Heroes,” Assurance employees have donated over 10,500 labor hours in a seven year span through volunteer opportunities organized by ACT. The Northern Illinois Food Bank is one of over 15 events scheduled for this year.
