Schaumburg, IL (June 21, 2013) - Assurance, an independent insurance brokerage with offices near Chicago and St. Louis, continued its commitment to giving on June 18, 2013, when several employees spent their work day volunteering at the Animal House Shelter. This is the first year Assurance volunteers have assisted the organization.

Located in Huntley, Illinois, Animal House Shelter is a no-kill shelter for all breeds of cats and dogs. The organization rescues abused and/or neglected dogs and cats and rehabilitates them. About 98 percent of the dogs at Animal House Shelter are from high 'kill' shelters, pounds and various animal control facilities where they were listed as strays and scheduled to be euthanized. Since opening in June 2002, over 23,000 dogs and cats have been rescued, rehabilitated and placed into loving, forever homes.

Assurance's Animal House Shelter volunteer day is one of 15 similar days scheduled for 2013 where Assurance employees will donate their time to deserving nonprofit organizations. All volunteer days are organized by the company's employee-driven charitable foundation, Assurance Caring Together (ACT).

At the shelter, Assurance volunteers worked outside planting bushes, pulling weeds, laying mulch and happily walking dogs. What was once a grassy area under a tree is now beautifully landscaped with a bench, bushes, flowers and mulch. The goal was to have the 100'x200' side yard look more like a park for visitors where families can get to know the dogs and cats available for adoption. With the help of Assurance employees, the park is now ready for a July event Animal House Shelter will be hosting at their facility.

"I loved being at Animal House Shelter and helping improve their yard so it's a more welcoming place where dogs and their potential owners get to interact,” said Stephanie Heller, Account Manager at Assurance. "I even adopted one of the puppies named Hannah and went back later to take her home.”

Under the motto "We Can Be Heroes”, Assurance employees have donated 12,600 labor hours in over an eight year span through volunteer opportunities organized by ACT. If you or your business would like to volunteer at Animal House Shelter, please visit www.animalhouseshelter.com.
