Schaumburg, IL (August 16, 2013) - Assurance, an independent insurance brokerage with offices near Chicago and St. Louis, continued its commitment to giving on August 8, 2013, when a number of employees spent their work day volunteering with Northern Illinois Food Bank (NIFB) in Geneva, Illinois. This is the ninth year Assurance volunteers have assisted the organization.
With one in five kids across northern Illinois facing hunger, the NIFB aims to acquire and distribute food to pantries, soup kitchens, shelters and other 501(c)(3) hunger reduction sites in 13 surrounding communities. The nonprofit also offers educational opportunities to become more effective at fighting hunger. The food bank has centers in Geneva (West Suburban Center), Lake County (North Suburban Center), Loves Park (Northwest Center) and an office in Joliet.
The volunteer opportunity is one of 15 similar days scheduled for 2013 where Assurance employees will donate their time to deserving nonprofit organizations. All volunteer days are organized by the company's employee-driven charitable foundation, Assurance Caring Together (ACT).
At the event, Assurance employees played an integral role in preparing boxes of cereal and meat for local shelters. The group packed 1,020 pounds of cereal into one pound bags and then sealed each one for easy distribution. Their efforts equated to 850 meals for the nearly one in eight hungry neighbors in Illinois. In the afternoon, the group checked meat packages for either discoloration or holes and then boxed different types of meat in 20 pound increments. By days end, Assurance volunteers packed 5,400 pounds of meat providing 4,500 meals, as well as prepared an additional 2,000 pounds of bulk packaged meat. All in all, over 5,500 meals were created and 8,420 pounds of food were packaged to help the nearly 60,000 people who rely on the Northern Illinois Food Bank each week.
"It was my first time at the Northern Illinois Food Bank, and I was truly moved by the experience,” said Shar Knuth, Account Executive at Assurance. She continued, "It's an eye opener on just how much goes to waste, and I hope that by gathering friends and neighbors to come back, we can make even a small difference for those in need.”
Under the motto "We Can Be Heroes”, Assurance employees have donated over 12,600 labor hours in a nine year span through volunteer opportunities organized by ACT. If you or your business would like to volunteer at the Northern Illinois Food Bank, please visit www.solvehungertoday.org.
