Schaumburg, IL (May 15, 2014) - Assurance, an independent insurance brokerage with offices in Chicago and St. Louis, was named the second Best Place to Work in Illinois according to the Daily Herald. This is the fifth consecutive year Assurance has finished in the Daily Herald’s top five. The company was honored in the medium employers (100-499 U.S. employees) category. Assurance client Skender Construction topped the list in that category.
The ranking was announced on Monday, May 12, at an awards ceremony held at the Chicago Marriott Oak Brook, where 65 companies competed for the honor of Best Places to Work in Illinois.
The rankings are determined through a two-part company assessment with an emphasis on employee engagement. The first part is benefits and perks (25 percent) and the second is through anonymous employee survey responses (75 percent). The top-rated companies receive statewide recognition and a special feature published in the June 23 edition of the Daily Herald Business Ledger. All participating companies (whether ranked or not) receive detailed data identifying the strengths and weaknesses of their workplace according to what their employees had to say.
Top ranked Assurance prides itself on a unique corporate culture that encourages its employees to be insurance “Rock Stars”. Each year, a company theme – usually set to a bad 80’s tune – sets the tone for various programs designed to increase employee engagement. The company has kept up morale and engagement through on-site massages, catered breakfast and luncheons, company happy hours in the penthouse and other fun activities.
A number of wellness-focused initiatives are promoted throughout the year, including free fitness classes, the Assurance Olympics and even an accredited company 5K that gives every employee a bonus just for participating. Last year, 93 percent of employees completed a 5K Challenge as part of a shared company goal.
Assurance also has an extensive employee-run program for giving back to the community aptly titled Assurance Caring Together (ACT). Through ACT, employees can donate money and time to deserving organizations and are also provided one paid day off each year to volunteer.
“We thank the Daily Herald for selecting Assurance as a Best Place to Work for the fifth year in a row,” said Lisa Pinion, Senior Vice President, Human Resources. “We firmly believe happy, engaged employees influence every aspect of Assurance including our bottom line; our various programs and policies support this belief.”
The Assurance commitment to employee engagement is apparent in the more than 100 awards received for corporate culture, including 2013 accolades from Fortune, Business Insurance, Crain’s, The Chicago Tribune and the American Heart Association. The Daily Herald is a welcomed addition for 2014 and further exemplifies the power employee engagement can have in the success of a company.
