Schaumburg, Ill. (October 27, 2014)Assurance, an award-winning independent insurance brokerage, continued its commitment to giving on October 8, 2014, when a number of employees spent their work day volunteering with Northern Illinois Food Bank. This is the tenth year and second time in 2014 that Assurance volunteers have assisted the organization.

Serving more than 60,000 people each week, the NIFB aims to acquire and distribute food to pantries, soup kitchens, shelters and other 501(c)(3) hunger reduction sites in 13 surrounding communities. The nonprofit also offers educational opportunities to become more effective at fighting hunger. The food bank has centers in Geneva (West Suburban Center), Lake County (North Suburban Center), Loves Park (Northwest Center) and an office in Joliet.

The volunteer opportunity is one of 18 similar events scheduled for 2014, where Assurance employees donate their time to deserving nonprofit organizations. All volunteer days are organized by the company’s employee-driven charitable foundation Assurance Caring Together (ACT).

In the morning, Assurance employees sorted five pound bags of cucumbers with a few other volunteer groups; then in the afternoon, the group switched to 20 pound boxes of meat. All together, the group packed 14,215 pounds of cucumbers that will provide 11,846 meals. This was in addition to 8,280 pounds of meat and 6,900 meals. In August, a different set of Assurance employees packed 6,800 meals – generating 25,500+ meals total this year.

“It’s great to have employees from all departments come together and work towards ending hunger in our local communities,” said Sean Baker, CRM Specialist at Assurance. He continued, “We’ve formed an amazing partnership with the Northern Illinois Food Bank over the last ten years.”

Under the motto “We Can Be Heroes”, Assurance employees have donated over 14,500 labor hours in a nine year span through volunteer opportunities organized by ACT. If you or your business would like to volunteer with NIFB, please visit solvehungertoday.org.
