SCHAUMBURG, Ill. (June 22, 2016) — Schaumburg-based independent insurance agency Assurance announced that it will support the American Heart Association’s efforts to improve wellness by targeting the workplace. Heart disease awareness hits home for some of Assurance’s leadership, and the brand was built on a platform aimed at improving the health and wellness of its employees, making the support of the Heart Association a natural fit. Assurance will join the American Heart Association in building healthier lives, using the workplace as a target to make an impact.

Assurance CMO Steven Handmaker has lost three family members to heart disease, forcing him to learn at an early age the importance of awareness and prevention.

“As the CMO of a company that has workplace wellness engrained at our core, and because of my personal experiences, I’ve often thought of what our organization can do to get more involved in the fight against heart disease,” Handmaker said. “I’m very passionate about what the AHA is doing to spread awareness and educate people on the topic, and I think this support is a natural fit for both of us."

Handmaker isn’t the only person at Assurance who has been personally impacted by heart disease. Michael Alberico, senior vice president, construction practice leader at Assurance, was forced to be proactive about health and wellness at an early age after losing his father to a heart attack, and having heart disease run throughout his extended family.

“People don’t realize the impact heart disease can have, but education, awareness and technology are saving lives,” Alberico said. “Much of this is because of the AHA. Heart disease affects everyone. The efforts of the AHA and funds raised to support them are so important to making an impact.”

Assurance will support the AHA in a variety of capacities, starting with the Worksite Wellness Symposium that was held at UIC Forum on June 8. Chicago’s top leaders gathered for the symposium to learn more about wellness in the workplace and how that transcends to improve overall healthcare.

Assurance will also be highly involved in Hard Hats with Heart, the AHA’s construction industry-focused event at Soldier Field September 8, 2016; and the Go Red For Women campaign, the AHA’s signature campaign for raising awareness among women.

“Supporting the AHA was a no-brainer for Assurance,” Handmaker added. “Health and wellness is a big part of our practice, and we truly believe that if we start in the workplace, we can make a bigger impact on the state of health and healthcare overall.”
